Heroes of Their Day: Honouring Ukrainian Canadian WWII Veterans

Updated: Nov 1, 2023

Saskatoon, 1 November 2023

The Ukrainian Canadian Congress, Saskatoon Branch, will be hosting a commemorative program honouring the Ukrainian Canadian Servicemen and Servicewomen who served Canada in World War Two.

The commemorative program will include the presentation of the Heroes of Their Day Prokrova Icons to Saskatoon's Ukrainian Canadian community and a showing of the John Paskievich documentary film A Canadian War Story.

The Ukrainian Canadian Civil Liberties Foundation has been honouring the Ukrainian Canadian men and women who served Canada during the Second World War. This project is titled Heroes of Their Day. The first phase of the project was to install a stained-glass window at St. James's Parish in London, England. It was the Church's vicarage that the Ukrainian Canadian Servicemen's Association used. The second phase of the Heroes of Their Day project is commemorating the Ukrainian Canadian veterans in a most unique and evocative way: by way of an icon of the Mother of God watching over servicemen and servicewomen. This commissioned icon will be installed in the Cathedrals of both the Ukrainian Catholic and Ukrainian Orthodox Churches across Canada.
